O Caroline

from Dreamland by Jennifer Maidman

about

This song originally appeared on the 1972 Matching Mole album. It was written by Robert Wyatt and Dave Sinclair. It's a haunting song of love and longing, which I've been singing for many years as part of Annie's Soupsongs project, a band which plays Robert's music, and which accompanied him for the live performances featured in the BBC documentary 'Free Will and Testament'. I originally heard the first line 'David's on piano' as 'Dave sits on piano' , and have sung it like that ever since. It's a reference to Dave Sinclair of course, keyboard player with Matching Mole. Although there's no piano on our version, David (Torn) was next to the piano as he played guitar on the track at Dreamland, albeit not quite actually sitting on it. The vocal, acoustic guitar and creaky stool were recorded live at Dreamland.I had a dreadful sore throat but when I listened to it back I liked the result. Matthew working his magic with the API desk and a Neumann U47. Annie, inspired by the Mellotron on the original, came up with a beautiful trombone arrangement. Paul Brady sent some wonderful whistle all the way from Dublin. I called Robert to tell him what we were up to and back home in Sawkill flew in some trumpet and vocal samples, using the 'Wyatttron'.

lyrics

David's on piano, and I may play on a drum
And we'll try to make the music work, we'll try to have some fun
But I just can't help thinking that if you were here with me
I'd get all my thoughts in focus and play more excitingly
I love you still - Caroline
I want you still - Caroline
I need you still - Caroline

If you call this sentimental crap you'll make me mad
Cause you know that I would not sing about some passing fad
And if my attempts at rhyming aren't convincing to your ear
Then memories betray you through the passing of the year
I love you still - Caroline
I want you still - Caroline
I need you still - Caroline

You must think it doubtful that I mean the words I sing
Or that all attempts to reach you this way could not mean a thing
But you must admit we both thought we'd be man and wife
And that I could make you happy for the best part of your life

I love you still - Caroline
